What Does Success Mean to You?

I have asked this question many times to myself and to my clients.

I have asked this question many times to myself and to my clients. After attending my Proactive Accountants Network induction meeting held in Brisbane earlier this year, I believe we finally have come up with an answer that everyone will agree with:-

Definition of Success is:-

"Doing what you want, when you want, with whom you want, in the manner you want”

We all tend to get up and go to work in our businesses each day not really knowing the answers to these questions.
The beauty is that they do not have to be set in stone and can change frequently. Obviously we all should have a goal or target in which we aspire to reach, whether it is monetary or emotional is up to the individual.

Imagine knowing the answers to the above questions. How much clearer your reasons would be for achieving your goals. Each of us would wake up each morning with a spring in our step as we would feel purpose in what we are doing.

This definition was put to us by our business coach, Rob Nixon, and it was like a light went on for all in the room (about 20 accountants), I know this is a scary thought having 20 accountants in one room, but remember we are PROACTIVE Accountants. As an exercise our coach got us all to write down our answers to these questions. Every single person had completely different answers even business partners in the same firms. However, one thing was common, everyone listed what they wanted to do in their personal lives such as time with family, sport, fitness, holidays etc and then worked backwards calculating what their business had to earn in order for them to achieve their personal success and how they had defined it.

So what does all this mean and how can we help? Well, it means that once you can answer these questions we can then work backwards and find out what your business needs to achieve in order for you to be successful based on your own definition. We do this by such services we have mentioned in our previous blogs and articles on our website such as a 3 way budget, regular monitoring of this budget and a planning day that will document your definition of success and how we intend to achieve that success. From this planning day you will develop a One Page Strategic Plan which is easy to follow and will be a document you can hang on the wall and refer to each day that will motivate you and your team.

I hope after reading this blog you sit down and think about your own realistic definition of success and are YOU "doing what you want, when you want, with whom you want, in the manner you want?”
